One Month For UPSC Prelims 2009

First of all my sincere apologies to all the readers of this blog (www.upsc-prelims.blogspot.com) for this inordinate delay in answering your queries. I had my interview scheduled on 23rd March (Afternoon Session)and was busy with interview related preparation. From now onwards I would try to be more regular in posting relevant articles and answering your queries relating to UPSC prelims examination.
Those who are appearing for UPSC Prelims in May 2009 should gear up and focus much more on their optional and current affairs portion of General Studies. Around this time various books for current affairs are available in the market,I personally found Spectrum's Current Affairs guide to be the best of the lot.Another thing that aspirants must do is to practice previous year UPSC question papers. This practice would be immensely useful and also build confidence level. One should always remember that there is no such thing as perfect preparation ,but one should strive for getting closer to perfection. It is very important to keep one's spirits high while the exam is approaching and do not fall into the trap of trying harder next year.Give your best this time only and god willing things will turn out right.

HI ABHISHEK
I AM IN CONFUSION TO SELECT SECOND OPTIONAL SUBJECT BETWEEN PSYCHOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY.ACTUALLY I AM DOING JOB AT JALANDHAR(PUNJAB)AND I CANT LEAVE JOB AND TAKE COACHING BUT AS YOU DID MENTION IN YOUR PSYCHOLOGY PREPRATION THAT ONE SHOULD TRY TO GET PATHAK SIR NOTES FROM RESORCES.I AM SHARING WITH YOU THAT I AM HAVING THE SAME ARRANGED IT FROM MR.RAVNEET(25TH RANK CSE 2005)BUT ABHI DO YOU THINK PSYCHOLOGY CAN BE STUDIED WITH NOTES AND WITHOUT COACHING.AS FAR AS INTEREST IS CONCERENED I AM HAVING LOT OF INTEREST IN PSYCHOLOGY AND AT THE SAME TIME FEAR TO THINK TO FETCH GOOD MARKS.NOW WITH CHANGE OF SYLLABUS DO YOU THINK THOSE ARE OLD NOTES OR ANY OTHER IMPACT ON SUBJECT.THANKS

Hi Abhishek, I have applied for CSP2009 but haven't got the admit card yet. I read in some site that the venue info can be obtained from the UPSC site, using that we can take the exam by producing a valid identity proof. Is it true? If so, when will the venue info be made available? Can you please let me know. Thanks in advance. All the best for your CSE results.

Hi Abhishek,
read an AD for JTS Institute Bangalore's GS TOP SCORER guide for around Rs 990, as a last fortnight refresher to prelims.
Is it worth buying?
(It claims that in 2008, 121 questions out of 150 were from this book)
http://www.jtsinstitute.in/mncto.asp

I am looking for a question bank / mock test papers kind of book for GS prelims 2009.

Request your guidance.
Regards,
Saurabh

@ Vandna, Moon , Arvinder Sethi ... thx :)

Abhishek said...

@Arvinder Sethi ... i think psychology can be prepared well even without coaching, but u will hv to make efforts n read the textbooks (Baron and Morgan&King)... syllabus has been changed a bit last year,so u will need to collect notes for new areas from some source (internet, coaching centres etc) ... ppl score high n low in all optionals ,so its more abt the individual's preparation level than optional per se which is responsible ...go with ur interest ...all d best !!!

Abhishek said...

@Melanie ... hope u have got someone to take admission on ur behalf ,frm vajiram's website u can get the phone numbers and contact them ... gud luck !!!

Abhishek said...

@Srinivas ... i think venue information wud be made available at least 15 days before exam, but please contact UPSC for authentic information ...

Abhishek said...

@Saurabh ... hvnt heard about that book,so i cant say much ... but the claim of 120+ questions is too far fetched ... generally wht hppns is these guide books will include all kind of information in their bulky guides and then claim that everything has come directly or indirectly frm their guide books ... its an advertising gimmick ... best way to prepare wud be to read text books and make ur own notes ,no harm in buying the book though but thinking that even 50 odd questions wud come only frm there wud not be prudent ...all d best !!!

Hi Abhishekh!
I'll be making my first attempt in 2010. Since I plan to avail for postal guidance, I want to know if the materials provided by coaching institutes vary from year to year. For eg. I would like to get GS Mains materials from Vajiram. Would there be any difference if I order them now or should I wait until next year? I would also like to know which institute is good for Sociology Postal coaching. You had mentioned Ramaswamy & Upendra. But, Ramaswamy does'nt give postal coaching.

I am in the final year of my engineering from Chandigarh and have been placed at Infosys. I am thinking to drop one year but it also involves a substantial risk. Since you are an engineer too, please could you tell me how did you manage this job problem and all. Did you take your attempts while doing the job alongside?

Hi Abhishek,
Just a quick question. I know you would be too busy to answer and i am not the only one to ask questions. I am preparing for 2010. I have taken PA (first) and Psycho (second) as my subjects. I am a bit confused about the strategy. I know we need to study on our own but i would def go for coaching as it is my first time. I don't know whether to go for GS+Psycho from june till sept and PA from oct or PA+Psycho from june and GS from oct. Could you please let me know the strategy. I have finalized vajiram for GS, Mukul pathak for Psycho but nt sure about PA. I have heard of Bhiwani singh, Mohanty. Could you please throw some light. I would be highly indebted to you.
I did my mech engg from NIT. I resigned after 2.5 years of work in a SW firm.

Thanks.
Abhinav
